Na Gaeil Nua, the first Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club specifically for immigrants in Dublin, served as a central point for Europe Day celebrations on May 9, 2026. Members of the newly affiliated club gathered in Fairview Park to mark the annual celebration of the European Union’s 27 member states.
The event highlighted the use of sport as a tool for integration, and solidarity. Na Gaeil Nua is one of the newest clubs to be affiliated with the GAA and currently counts members from approximately 40 different nationalities.
Community Integration Through Sport
The club focuses on inclusion for those relocating to Ireland, providing a space to build community and engage with local traditions. Cristina Santoyo, the club secretary and a native of Mexico, noted that while the club is essentially for immigrants, it remains open to everyone.
Santoyo described the club as a means to meet people and learn more about Irish culture, stating that it is hard when you move to a new country
and that the club provides a vital way to build community.
Former Dublin GAA footballer Michael Darragh Macauley participated in the celebrations by conducting training sessions with the New Gaels. Macauley emphasized the capacity of the GAA to unite different groups of people.
We know how important GAA is, we know how it can bring communities together. People are so passionate about it and we need to highlight these kind of welcoming projects

Government and Official Recognition
The celebrations included a visit from Thomas Byrne, the Minister of State for European Affairs. During his visit, Byrne congratulated the team on their official affiliation with the GAA.

Minister Byrne stated that the Irish government is currently working toward having Gaelic Games recognized as an official sport across various European countries.
Historical Context of Europe Day
Europe Day is observed annually on May 9 to commemorate the union of the European Union. The date marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which was delivered by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950.
The 2026 celebrations also coincided with the 40th anniversary of the first time the blue flag with gold stars was flown. This year’s observances across Ireland and other member states featured various sporting events designed to emphasize the power of inclusion.
