For decades, nutritional guidance has largely centered on weight management and cardiovascular health. However, a new approach is emerging that prioritizes a woman’s often-overlooked intimate health. The Latin American Institute of Gynecology (ILAGINE) in Peru is spearheading this shift with the presentation of a “new pyramid of intimate health,” a dietary model specifically designed to foster a healthy vaginal ecosystem and regulate the female endocrine system.

The initiative comes as research increasingly highlights the strong link between diet and gynecological well-being. According to Dr. Cristian Hidalgo, the traditional Peruvian diet, often high in refined carbohydrates and sugars, is directly related to an increase in cases of chronic candidiasis (yeast infections) and bacterial vaginosis.

“We cannot separate what we eat from our gynecological health,” explains Dr. Hidalgo. “Sugar is the preferred fuel of fungi, while the lack of probiotics weakens our first line of defense: lactobacilli.”

The Pillars of the New Model

ILAGINE’s proposal reimagines nutritional priorities, placing hydration and pH balance at the base of the pyramid, and positioning processed foods at the top, representing items to limit or avoid. This represents a paradigm shift in how women in Peru are encouraged to view nutrition in relation to their overall health.

The model outlines four key components:

Hydration and pH Balance

Water is considered the essential component for maintaining lubrication of mucous membranes and the elimination of toxins. The consumption of water with citrus fruits is recommended to promote a slightly acidic pH, which is ideal for vaginal protection.

Probiotics and Prebiotics

Foods such as kefir, natural yogurt (without added sugar), and vegetable fibers – specifically asparagus and artichokes – are essential for “populating” the body with beneficial bacteria. These bacteria migrate from the intestine to the intimate area, contributing to a healthy microbiome.

Healthy Fats and Omega-3

The use of sacha inchi, avocado, and nuts is vital for hormonal production and the reduction of systemic inflammation. This is particularly important for women experiencing painful periods or those in menopause.

Antioxidants and Zinc

Red fruits and seeds – pumpkin and sunflower seeds in particular – provide the micronutrients necessary for tissue regeneration and local immunity.

A Paradigm Shift in Peru

Intimate health remains a sensitive topic for many women, often surrounded by taboos. This can lead to self-medication with suppositories or antibiotics, which, over time, can disrupt the protective flora of the vagina. ILAGINE proposes a preventative approach, starting with dietary choices made at the supermarket.

“In Peru we have superfoods like maca and seeds rich in zinc that are powerful allies of our hormones,” Dr. Hidalgo adds. “This pyramid is not a diet to lose weight, it is a biological defense system.”

The Institute emphasizes the importance of women observing their menstrual cycle and its associated symptoms – discharge, odor, sensitivity – as direct indicators of their nutritional status. They advocate for comprehensive gynecological consultations that include dietary advice.

The Gut-Vagina Connection

The importance of gut health in relation to vaginal health is also being increasingly recognized. An imbalanced gut microbiome can lead to systemic inflammation, compromised immunity, and disrupted hormonal balance – all of which can affect intimate wellness. This connection underscores the importance of incorporating probiotic and prebiotic-rich foods into the diet.

Diet and Vaginal Health: A Broader Perspective

Beyond the specific recommendations of the ILAGINE pyramid, a broader understanding of the impact of diet on vaginal health is emerging. Excessive sugar consumption is known to fuel fungal growth, increasing the risk of yeast infections. A lack of essential nutrients can diminish the body’s natural defenses. Consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and nuts, can help reduce inflammation and support overall vaginal health. Hydration is also vital for overall health, including vaginal health.

a recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Reproductive Health in January 2025 indicated a direct correlation between dietary sugar intake and the prevalence of recurring yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis.

The emerging focus on intimate health nutrition represents a significant shift in preventative medicine, urging women to view nutrition as an essential component of their overall gynecological care. By prioritizing hydration, pH balance, and a diet rich in probiotics, healthy fats, antioxidants, and zinc, women can proactively support a healthy vaginal ecosystem and hormonal balance.
