Minor Quake Felt Across Parts of New York City
A 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, on Saturday, sending tremors that were felt across parts of New york City. While no major impacts were promptly reported, emergency management officials are advising residents to be prepared for potential aftershocks.
Aftershocks and Safety Precautions
NYC Emergency Management confirmed that tremors may have been felt in various parts of the city. In a post on their X account, the agency urged New Yorkers to be vigilant for aftershocks, wich can occur minutes, hours, or even days after the initial event. Residents who experienced shaking are encouraged to check their surroundings for any hazards, such as displaced items, falling debris, or visible cracks.
The iconic Empire State Building humorously acknowledged the seismic activity, posting on X, “I AM FINE.”
Context and Likelihood of Larger Events
According to experts, Saturday’s earthquake was substantially less severe than major seismic events, such as the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Russia that previously triggered tsunami warnings in the U.S. While aftershocks of around 1.0 magnitude are possible, experts deem it unlikely that this event is a precursor to a larger earthquake. Moreover, it is indeed not believed to be an aftershock of the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that occured in the region in April 2024.
