Financial Challenges Threaten Jersey City Hospital
Hudson Regional Health, based in Secaucus, New Jersey, announced on September 26, 2024, that it may suspend non-essential services at Heights University Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey, if it does not receive “ample financial support” from teh state and other government entities.the announcement was shared with Becker’s Hospital Review.
Hudson Regional Health was formed in late May 2024 as part of the bankruptcy exit of Bayonne, New Jersey-based CarePoint Health System. The formation involved four hospitals.
Recent Investments and Ongoing Losses
The four hospitals – Heights University Hospital, Bayonne University Hospital, Hoboken (N.J.) University Hospital, and Secaucus University Hospital – were rebranded in mid-September 2024. Despite investing over $300 million in the last 10 months, with a significant portion directed towards heights University Hospital, Hudson Regional Health is facing continued financial difficulties.
Nizar Kifaieh, MD, CEO of Hudson Regional Health, stated in the release that the hospital anticipates annual losses exceeding $60 million without public financial assistance.
Restructuring Plan Under Consideration
Dr. Kifaieh indicated that the board of directors has authorized a restructuring plan to ensure continued healthcare access to the community, following a potential suspension of services at Heights University Hospital. The goal is to maintain services in a financially and structurally sound manner. Hudson Regional Health intends to collaborate with the Department of Health and other government partners to develop a long-term solution.
