New Leadership at Miami-Dade Animal Services: Improving Animal Care and Community Trust

Miami-Dade Animal Services Under New Management

Doral, Fla. – Miami-Dade Animal Services (M-DAS) is now managed by Annette Jose, the shelter’s third director in three years. She aims to tackle overcrowding and improve conditions for animals and staff.

In an exclusive interview with Local 10, Jose allowed reporters access to areas previously closed to the public, emphasizing transparency. “We have nothing to hide,” she stated, highlighting recent changes within the shelter.

The shelter has faced various challenges, including protests related to euthanasia and tensions with rescue groups. At times, overcrowding has led to using an overflow facility in Medley, known for flooding issues.

Jose acknowledged past criticisms of M-DAS but believes she is making progress. “Change happens slowly,” she said, advocating for patience during the reform process.

Each year, M-DAS cares for about 35,000 animals. The facility is designed for 350 dogs but often holds more. Jose’s initial goal was to reduce the dog population for better care. “We had 813 dogs when I started,” she explained, stressing the need for a manageable population.

Her initiatives include collaborating with rescue groups to relocate nearly 400 dogs before Hurricane Milton. Under her leadership, M-DAS has maintained a no-kill status, achieving a 90% save rate for dogs and cats.

Despite an annual budget exceeding $43 million, funding remains a challenge. Jose humorously remarked that public service professionals always wish for more resources.

Jose is committed to animal welfare, stating, “Every decision we make must be in the best interest of the animal.” She hopes to change public perceptions of the shelter. “I want M-DAS to be seen as part of the animal advocate community,” she said.

While the shelter serves a vital role in the community, Jose understands that rebuilding trust is essential for improving animal outcomes.
