The lopsided defeat marked a difficult transition for the Miners, who entered the matchup with a 1-3 record following the completion of their nonconference schedule.
Saturday’s contest marked UTEP’s official Mountain West Conference debut after spending 21 seasons in Conference USA. According to ESPN’s play-by-play report, the Lobos seized control from the outset, building a 21-0 lead by halftime. New Mexico continued to pull away in the second half, widening the advantage to 37-0 by the end of the third quarter.
New Mexico Scores Multiple Touchdowns as UTEP Replaces Quarterback
New Mexico’s offensive attack featured multiple scoring plays, with touchdowns recorded by Bailen George, Cade Keith, Cameron Mathews, Scottre Humphrey, and James Laubstein. Toa Fa’avae connected with Bailen George for a touchdown pass, while UNM defensive efforts included an interception by Ormanie Arnold and tackles by Darren Agu against the UTEP backfield.

UTEP starting quarterback E.J. Colson Jr. was replaced to start the second half. Backup quarterback Raymond Moore III took over under center for the remainder of the game, while Esteban Guillory contributed defensively with a tackle on UNM’s Kiefer Sibley.

Following the difficult conference-opening loss on the road, the Miners return home for their next fixture. UTEP will host Nevada on Saturday, October 10, at Sun Bowl Stadium for the program’s first Mountain West home game of the season.
