Saskatchewan is expanding its mobile mammography services with a second custom-built unit to improve breast cancer screening access for women in rural and northern communities.
The province announced on April 8, 2026 that the second mobile mammography unit will begin visiting communities the following week, working alongside the first unit to serve 42 rural and northern communities each year. Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill stated that having two units on the road means the province can now reach communities like Wynyard, Estevan, Carnduff, Buffalo Narrows, and Beauval on a yearly basis, whereas previously these locations were visited only once every two years.
David Tran, director of population health with the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, explained that the addition of the second unit increases capacity and access, which is expected to lead to higher participation in the BreastCheck program and better outcomes for women across the province. Each mobile mammography unit is projected to screen approximately 6,000 to 7,500 women annually.
