New MSHA Silica Dust Rule: Compliance Guidelines for Miners and Operators
Understanding Respirable Crystalline Silica
Table of Contents
Respirable crystalline silica, often called silica dust, poses risks for coal and metal/nonmetal (MNM) miners. Silica dust emerges during mining and milling tasks such as cutting, drilling, excavating, sanding, and crushing.
New Regulations for Silica Dust
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) introduced a rule titled Lowering Miners’ Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica and Improving Respiratory Protection. This rule began on June 17, 2024.
- Coal Mine Operators: Must comply by April 8, 2025.
- MNM Mine Operators: Must comply by April 8, 2026.
