New New York Regulations Aim to Lower Prescription Drug Costs: Insights from Local Pharmacies
New Regulations Aim to Lower Prescription Drug Costs in New York
Governor Kathy Hochul announced new regulations to address high prescription drug prices. These changes aim to protect consumers from Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) who increase costs. Customers at Brighton Eggert Pharmacy expressed hope that these regulations will help reduce their medication expenses.
Beverly Chuldzinski, a local resident, shared her struggles. She stated, “Either you eat or you need your prescriptions.” Doug Klopfer emphasized the need for government assistance for seniors with high drug costs.
The new regulations focus on managing PBMs, which Steve Giroux, a pharmacy owner, claims are responsible for rising prices and the closure of many pharmacies. He noted that three PBMs control 80% of the market, greatly influencing pricing. Giroux believes the regulations will enhance access to medications and lower costs.
Don Arthur, from Brighton Eggert Pharmacy, agreed that regulation is overdue. He explained that pharmacists often cannot inform patients of cheaper options due to strict contracts from PBMs. He hopes the changes will soon benefit consumers. Arthur highlighted the challenges pharmacies face when insurance reimbursement rates fall below the cost of medications.
Overall, the new regulations are seen as a positive step towards making prescription medications more affordable and accessible for consumers in New York.
