The expansion of Western Nevada College’s (WNC) rural nursing school in Carson City has taken a significant step forward, with state officials announcing plans to construct a new facility aimed at addressing the growing demand for healthcare professionals in Northern Nevada. The project, supported by state funding and partnerships with local healthcare providers, is expected to reduce the need for nursing students from Fallon and surrounding areas to travel to Carson City for specialized coursework. According to a statement from WNC, the new facility will include modern classrooms, simulation labs and clinical training spaces designed to enhance hands-on learning for nursing students. The college’s president, Dr. Laura Martinez, emphasized that the expansion is a critical response to workforce shortages in the region’s healthcare sector. “This investment ensures that students receive high-quality training without the logistical challenges of long commutes, ultimately strengthening our communities’ access to care,” she said. The announcement follows a recent visit by state Senator Emily Rosen, who highlighted the project’s alignment with broader efforts to improve educational access in rural Nevada. “Expanding nursing education in Carson City is a win for students, healthcare providers, and the entire region,” Rosen stated. “This facility will prepare the next generation of caregivers to meet the needs of our growing population.” Currently, nursing students in Fallon, a city approximately 120 miles south of Carson City, must travel to the college’s main campus for advanced coursework, a requirement that has placed financial and time-related burdens on many students. The new facility is anticipated to open in 2027, with construction beginning later this year. Local healthcare leaders have also praised the initiative. Dr. James Carter, CEO of Northern Nevada Medical Center, noted that the expansion will help address persistent staffing gaps in rural hospitals. “By training more nurses locally, we can ensure that patients in underserved areas receive consistent, quality care,” he said. The project is funded through a combination of state grants and private partnerships, though specific financial details were not disclosed in the initial announcement. WNC has yet to release a detailed timeline for construction or enrollment capacity. As the college moves forward with the expansion, stakeholders are hopeful that the new facility will serve as a model for addressing educational disparities in Nevada’s rural regions. “This is more than a building—it’s an investment in the future of healthcare and education,” said Dr. Martinez.
