congenital heart rhythm disorders can be life-threatening, and good treatment is lacking for many patients. The LUMC and Ncardia are accelerating the search for new drugs thanks to ‌an⁢ automated platform. In it, promising substances are quickly and reliably tested on⁤ a mini-heart made from stem cells.

In a heart rhythm disorder, the heart does not beat as⁤ it should. The rhythm‌ can be ‌too fast, too slow, or irregular. This is often due to a ‍problem in the heart’s electrical system. Some heart rhythm disorders are congenital. This means that people have lived with them since birth. These conditions can be life-threatening and‌ sometimes lead to⁤ sudden ‌death.

Although ⁣each individual condition is rare, approximately 1 ‌in‍ 2,000 people worldwide has a congenital heart rhythm disorder. For many ‌of these ⁢patients, there are limited good treatments. this ⁤makes‌ research into new ‌medicines and therapies very crucial.

From stem cell to mini-heart model

The new platform from ⁣the LUMC and Ncardia can play a major role in this.‌ the platform is based on‍ stem cells‌ and offers researchers unique opportunities to study heart rhythm ‍disorders.⁢ Richard‌ Davis, group⁤ leader at ‍the LUMC explains: ‘Stem cells are special cells that can multiply ⁢indefinitely and, under the right conditions, can grow into ⁢almost any cell type in our⁤ body in a laboratory, ⁤including cells of the ‌heart.’

During recent years, stem cell-based heart ⁤models ‍have become increasingly complex. ‘Previously, they consisted of a‌ single flat layer of‍ heart muscle cells grown from stem cells,’ says Davis. ‘Now, the models contain multiple types of ⁣heart cells. These cells work together in small‌ 3D
