In it, promising substances are quickly and reliably tested on a mini-heart made from stem cells.
In a heart rhythm disorder, the heart does not beat as it should. The rhythm can be too fast, too slow, or irregular. This is often due to a problem in the heart’s electrical system.Some heart rhythm disorders are congenital. This means that people have lived with them since birth. These conditions can be life-threatening and sometimes lead to sudden death.
Although each individual condition is rare, approximately 1 in 2,000 people worldwide has a congenital heart rhythm disorder. For many of these patients,there are limited good treatments. this makes research into new medicines and therapies very crucial.

From stem cell to mini-heart model
The new platform from the LUMC and Ncardia can play a major role in this. the platform is based on stem cells and offers researchers unique opportunities to study heart rhythm disorders. Richard Davis, group leader at the LUMC explains: ‘Stem cells are special cells that can multiply indefinitely and, under the right conditions, can grow into almost any cell type in our body in a laboratory, including cells of the heart.’
During recent years, stem cell-based heart models have become increasingly complex. ‘Previously,they consisted of a single flat layer of heart muscle cells grown from stem cells,’ says Davis. ‘Now, the models contain multiple types of heart cells. These cells work together in small 3D

Andere mogelijke toepassingen
Het platform kan ook gebruikt worden voor andere hartritmestoornissen of om te testen of chemische stoffen schadelijk zijn voor het hart. ‘Ook kan het mogelijkheden bieden voor patiënten die niet reageren op de standaardbehandeling en waarvoor geen goed alternatief beschikbaar is. Met het platform kunnen we mini-hartmodellen maken uit de stamcellen van patiënten.zo kan de behandeling volledig afgestemd worden op de patiënt’, sluit Davis af.
Het LUMC is onderdeel van het Leiden Bio Science Park, een ecosysteem waar bedrijven en kennisinstellingen werken aan biotechnologie en het ontwikkelen van nieuwe geneesmiddelen. Op het park werken talent, startups, bedrijven en onderzoekers dagelijks samen om deze innovaties sneller bij patiënten te krijgen. Zo maken we de zorg stap voor stap beter en de wereld een beetje gezonder.
Deze samenwerking werd financieel ondersteund door de Provincie Zuid-Holland via een Innovatiecampussubsidie, met aanvullende financiering binnen het LUMC vanuit het Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine (reNEW).
