A vacant skating rink in North Philadelphia is being transformed into a comprehensive health center that will provide medical services to all residents regardless of insurance status.
The Carman Gardens Skate Rink, located between Hunting Park and East Tioga, is undergoing renovation to become the Carman Gardens Health Center, a 22,000-square-foot facility set to open in 2027. The project is a collaboration between Greater Philadelphia Health Action (GPHA) and North10 Philadelphia, aiming to address longstanding health disparities in the community.
Brian Clark of Greater Philadelphia Health Action outlined the full range of services planned for the new center, stating, “We provide primary care for all ages, dental services, behavior health, pharmacy, lab, and we also have specialty, infectious disease, podiatry, rheumatology, endocrinology.” The center will accept all forms of insurance, including commercial plans, Medicare, and Medicaid, while also serving uninsured patients.
Clayton Pickens, a block captain who has lived in North Philadelphia for 50 years, emphasized the potential impact of the health center on the neighborhood, saying it will be a “game-changer for people in the neighborhood who have health challenges related to economics and access.”
Josh Klaris of North10 Philadelphia explained the preventive focus of the initiative, noting, “We should not be going to the hospital for our regular routine checkups. We should not be using the emergency room when we don’t need to.” He added that the center aims to help residents avoid unnecessary hospital visits by providing accessible routine care.
The development represents a significant investment in community health infrastructure for North Philadelphia, an area that has faced persistent challenges in accessing quality medical care. Despite being located just blocks from Temple Hospital, local officials argue that a neighborhood-based health center is essential for preventive care and reducing reliance on emergency services for routine health needs.
The ceremonial groundbreaking for the project has already taken place, marking the official start of construction on the former skate rink site. Once completed, the Carman Gardens Health Center will serve as a permanent fixture in the Hunting Park and East Tioga neighborhoods, providing ongoing medical services designed to improve long-term health outcomes for residents.
