Local Cycling Stars Honored at NPCA Awards Ceremony

Saunders Beach, Nassau – The New Providence Cycling Association (NPCA) celebrated another prosperous year of racing with its annual awards ceremony on sunday morning. Held against⁢ the picturesque backdrop of Saunders Beach, the ⁤event recognized the dedication and achievements of cyclists across various age groups.

Top performers like Kevin Daley, Tyrone Paul Jr, Claude Robertt,⁤ Andrew Cates, Ilaria Gercvasini, Sienna Culmer-Mackey, Barron Musgrove Jr, Malcolm Menzies, Tristan Johnson, Fraser Menzies, Erin Pritchard, Tylor⁢ Knowles, and Trenae Smith were among those who received accolades⁤ for their outstanding performances throughout the year.

NPCA president Barron “Turbo” Musgrove explained that the awards are based on a points system accumulated from the 10-12‍ races held annually. “Each race is a ⁤point race with the winner getting ten ⁢points, second gets nine, and it goes straight down,” Musgrove revealed. “you will get points from ten, nine, eight going down as well. We then total ⁣the points accumulated, and the cyclist who gets the most points ⁣is declared the winner in each category, from our elite senior cyclists to the youth age groups.”

Musgrove emphasized that consistency is key to winning these awards. “Some cyclists, who are ⁢not as good ⁢as the top cyclists, rode in all of the events, so they⁤ gained their points,” he pointed out. “So we want to encourage them and all of the cyclists who competed, even if they were not the fastest of the crew.”

elite male cyclist Kevin⁣ Daley, who emerged as the top performer in his category, acknowledged that he could have done better despite his victory. “It‍ started off kind of slow, but it turned out pretty good,” he said. “I had some injuries⁤ that set me back, but overall I got a new bike, so next year should be better.”

Veteran cyclist Jay Major, Daley’s main rival,‌ expressed satisfaction with his second-place finish.”My main goal was the Nationals and I pretty much did what I had to do there,” he said. “So⁣ I’m looking forward to next year and hopefully getting ‌ready for some international competition and hopefully a good season overall.”

ilaria Gervasini, the open women’s winner, admitted she woudl have welcomed more competition. “it was pretty good, but I made the best out of it,” said Gervasini, who has been cycling for‍ the past six years. “I’m enjoying it.”

Eighteen-year-old Sienna Culmer-Mackey, a University of the Bahamas accounting major, attributed her success in the under-23 female category to her multi-sport background. “I started about four⁣ years ago⁤ and I constantly see myself getting better and better,” said Culmer-Mackey, who also competes in ‌swimming and triathlons. “I still have a lot more advancement to go.”

The NPCA awards ceremony served as a testament to the growing popularity and competitive spirit within the local cycling community.⁢ As the cyclists gear up for the next season, the anticipation for more thrilling races and remarkable achievements is palpable.
