A new study has found that magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is as effective as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for treating severe depression but causes significantly less memory loss, offering patients a promising alternative with fewer cognitive side effects.

The research, conducted across the United States and Canada, involved nearly 300 adult patients diagnosed with non-psychotic major depressive disorder who had not responded to other treatments. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either MST or ECT, with some receiving treatment while hospitalized and others as outpatients.

After treatment, 48% of patients in both groups experienced a meaningful clinical recovery, indicating that MST matches ECT in effectiveness for reducing depressive symptoms. However, the impact on brain function differed substantially between the two approaches.

ECT works by using electrical currents to induce a therapeutic seizure, but this electricity can spread to brain regions such as the hippocampus, which plays a critical role in memory formation. In contrast, MST uses highly focused magnetic pulses to trigger a seizure that is more precisely targeted, thereby sparing areas of the brain responsible for memory and thinking.

The study found that 17.3% of patients receiving ECT experienced worsening memory, compared to only 2.7% of those treated with MST. 12 participants in the ECT group discontinued treatment due to non-serious adverse events, while only three in the MST group stopped for similar reasons.

Dr. [Name], co-leader of the study, described the findings as a major milestone for the field, noting that MST offers the same therapeutic benefits as ECT with a substantially improved safety profile regarding cognitive side effects. The full study is scheduled for publication in the May issue of The Lancet Psychiatry.

For patients with severe depression who have not found relief through medication or psychotherapy, ECT has long been considered a highly effective option. However, concerns about memory loss and confusion have often deterred individuals from pursuing this treatment. MST may address this barrier by providing comparable efficacy while minimizing risks to cognitive function.

While both treatments require medical supervision and are typically administered in clinical settings, the ability of MST to achieve similar outcomes with fewer cognitive side effects could influence future treatment guidelines and expand access to effective care for treatment-resistant depression.

Researchers emphasized that further studies are needed to understand the long-term effects of MST and to identify which patients may benefit most from this approach. Nonetheless, the current findings represent a significant step forward in refining neuromodulation therapies for depression.
