According to reporting from IGN and Space, Blizzard Entertainment announced a brand-new StarCraft game at BlizzCon 2026, marking a major franchise entry in over 15 years since the release of StarCraft 2. Departing from the traditional real-time strategy format of its predecessors, the upcoming title is a story-driven open-world shooter set for a 2030 release window.
A New Genre and Setting for the Sci-Fi Franchise
The upcoming game is set 70 years after the conclusion of StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void within the familiar Koprulu sector. The cinematic trailer shown at BlizzCon focuses heavily on the Dominion’s marines, highlighting a character named Holt who struggles during an encounter with the Zerg. The project features a cinematic reveal with no in-game footage displayed, which aligns with the distant 2030 launch schedule reported by IGN.
Development History and Prior Cancellations
Blizzard has faced a complicated history when attempting to transition the StarCraft franchise into the shooter genre. IGN reported that the company previously cancelled two separate shooter projects. The first attempt, StarCraft Ghost, was announced in 2002 as a tactical-action console game starring a Dominion Ghost operative before being cancelled in 2006 following multiple delays. A second shooter attempt, codenamed Ares and described as being similar to Battlefield within the StarCraft universe, was cancelled in 2019 to reallocate development resources toward Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2, according to IGN. The current development effort is led by former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay, who joined Blizzard in 2022 to spearhead the studio’s third attempt at a StarCraft shooter, as reported by IGN. Creative Director Dan Hay brings prior experience from working on Fear 3 and Far Cry 3 through 6, joined by a team largely composed of Blizzard veterans, including developers from the Overwatch team. Prior to the official BlizzCon reveal, the official StarCraft website featured visual glitches and warning notices indicating that user devices had been compromised, setting off widespread fan speculation that preceded the announcement, according to IGN.
