The Role of CANECPI-5
The central component of this artificial saliva is a sugarcane-derived protein known as CANECPI-5. This specific protein is engineered to bind directly to tooth enamel, creating a physical shield over the teeth.
This protective layer defends the enamel from various acidic threats, including acids found in alcohol and fruit juices, as well as acids originating from the stomach. By forming this barrier, the protein helps prevent the acid-driven erosion and decay that typically occur when natural saliva is insufficient.
Clinical Applications and Efficacy
The artificial saliva shows particular promise for patients suffering from head and neck cancer. These individuals often undergo radiotherapy near the mouth, a treatment that can damage the salivary glands and significantly reduce the body’s ability to produce natural saliva.

Because natural saliva is essential for controlling bacteria and protecting enamel, its loss leaves cancer patients highly susceptible to severe dental problems and rapid tooth decay. This sugarcane-based solution aims to fill that gap by providing a synthetic defense mechanism.
Early testing indicates that the efficacy of CANECPI-5 is further enhanced when it is used in conjunction with other traditional oral health agents. Specifically, the protein works more effectively when paired with:

- Xylitol
The combination of the sugarcane protein with these agents has been shown to significantly reduce overall damage to the teeth compared to using the protein alone.
