New Taipei Ring Line Fully Resumes Operations
New Taipei Ring Line Back on Track After Quake Repairs
New Taipei City, Taiwan – Just six months after a powerful earthquake disrupted service, the New Taipei Ring Line is set to fully reopen today, a testament to the city’s rapid recovery efforts.
Mayor Hou Youyi announced the resumption of service, highlighting the remarkable speed at which repairs were completed. “Initially, experts estimated it would take 14 months to restore the damaged sections,” Mayor Hou stated. “Thanks to the tireless work of our city government team and multiple work crews, we’ve managed to cut that time in half.”
The 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 3rd caused notable damage to the Ring Line, displacing nine steel box girders and damaging 139 facilities.
To ensure the safety of passengers, the restoration project incorporated a dual protection system and replaced existing disc-type supports with stronger alternatives, boosting support strength by 66%. Additional anti-fall bridges and anti-pull-out devices were also installed to enhance earthquake resistance.
“We conducted rigorous static and dynamic tests, achieving a 100% success rate,” Mayor Hou emphasized. “I personally took a test train from Banxin Station to Zhonghe Station to confirm its safety and readiness for service.”
MRT Director Li Zhengan detailed the extensive repair work undertaken. “Over 248 days, we held 67 meetings and completed the restoration of nine span steel box girders in just three months,” he explained. “We replaced 1,438 track base sheets, restored 1,050 meters of track, and updated water ring cables and 22kv high-voltage cables.”
Starting at noon today, trains will resume service between Banqiao and Zhonghe stations, with the entire Ring Line operational. During peak hours, trains will run every 5-7 minutes, while off-peak service will see intervals of 8-10 minutes.
The reopening of the New Taipei Ring Line marks a significant milestone in the city’s recovery from the earthquake, restoring a vital transportation link for residents and commuters.
