The Assistance publique des hôpitaux de Marseille is advancing its hospital modernization project at CHU La Timone with the construction of a new 49,000-square-foot Women, Parents, and Children center. Funded by an investment program spanning 2022 to 2030, the facility brings together pediatric services with gynecology, obstetrics, and neonatology departments previously located at La Conception hospital.
Infrastructure and Site Development at CHU La Timone
Located along the chemin de l’armée d’Afrique in the fifth arrondissement of Marseille, the new building features eight total levels. Five floors are dedicated to patient care spaces complete with an outdoor terrace, while two levels provide parking reserved for hospital personnel, topped by a rooftop belvedere. Demolition work on the older G buildings and the former Timone nursery took place over the previous year. Heavy construction activity ramped up with three active tower cranes and approximately one hundred workers on site pouring concrete and establishing the foundation framework.
Investment and Regional Public Funding
The broader infrastructure update relies on an investment envelope exceeding one billion euros allocated across the 2022 to 2030 timeframe. Exceptional state contributions from the national recovery plan alongside funding from territorial collectives—including the Région, the Bouches-du-Rhône department, the Métropole, and the City of Marseille—finance the initiative. Within this regional modernization effort, the dedicated center featuring a level 3 maternity unit represents a distinct capital cost of 268 million euros.
