Microsoft may be preparing to introduce new tiers to its Xbox Game Pass service that include monthly time limits for cloud gaming, according to recent findings from code analysis.
Through tracking of Microsoft’s public-facing backend, analyst @redphx on X has identified references to a project codenamed “TRITON,” which appears to be a Game Pass tier focused on first-party Xbox games. This would include titles such as Doom, Halo, Hellblade, and State of Decay.
Accompanying TRITON is a second codename, “Duet,” which earlier analysis suggested could relate to a potential integration with Netflix, a possibility previously discussed by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters.
Recent updates to the codebase now indicate that both TRITON and Duet may be associated with a monthly time allowance for Xbox Cloud Gaming. This would represent a shift from the current offering, as no existing Game Pass tier imposes limits on cloud playtime.
Such limits are not unprecedented in the cloud gaming market. For comparison, NVIDIA’s GeForce Now service caps users at approximately 100 hours of playtime on its highest tier, which is priced at $19.99 per month.
While the specific duration of any potential limit for Xbox Cloud Gaming has not been disclosed in the code findings, the introduction of such restrictions would mark a notable change in Microsoft’s approach to its cloud gaming offerings.
As of now, Microsoft has not officially announced the TRITON or Duet tiers, nor confirmed any plans to implement monthly time limits for cloud gaming. The details remain based on backend code analysis and have not been validated through official channels.
