New York Film Critics Circle Unveils 2024 Award Winners
The oldest critics group in the U.S., the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC), has announced its picks for the best films and performances of 2024, kicking off awards season with a bang.
Known for its strong correlation with the Academy Awards,the NYFCC’s best film selection often foreshadows Oscar success.Since the Oscars expanded to 10 nominees in 2009, only two NYFCC winners – “Carol” (2015) and “First Cow” (2020) – missed out on a best picture nomination. Notably, “First Cow” made history as the first film in the NYFCC’s long history to fail to garner a single Oscar nomination.Last year, the group chose Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” as their top pick, which went on to recieve 10 Oscar nominations.Christopher Nolan was named best director for his biographical drama “Oppenheimer,” which also received multiple Oscar nods.
Two of the four NYFCC acting winners last year – Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and eventual winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) – went on to be nominated for Oscars.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary, the NYFCC comprises over 50 journalists from prominent publications, including Variety‘s chief film critic owen Gleiberman. David Sims will serve as the NYFCC chair in 2024, with Stephen Garrett continuing as the group’s general manager. The annual awards gala will be held on January 8, 2025, at TAO downtown in New York.
