Tragedy Strikes Midtown Manhattan as Security Guard and Real Estate Executive Among Victims
NEW YORK – A gunman who opened fire in a Midtown Manhattan office building on Tuesday, killing two people and wounding another, was reportedly targeting the National Football League’s offices but entered the wrong elevator, according to New York City Mayor Eric adams. The devastating incident has sent shockwaves through the city, highlighting the ever-present threat of gun violence in urban centers.
The attack unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent skyscraper that houses various corporate offices, including those of the NFL. The shooter, whose identity has not yet been released, began his rampage in the building’s lobby, fatally shooting a security guard and another individual before proceeding to the 33rd floor.
A Fatal Miscalculation and a City in Mourning
Authorities revealed that the gunman ascended to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot a senior managing director specializing in real estate. Following the shooting, the assailant took his own life.The building also houses offices for the financial services firm KPMG.
Mayor Adams, speaking on a local television program, detailed the harrowing sequence of events. “Our officer, he was slain in the entryway to the right as soon as he entered the building, the suspect entered the building,” Adams stated.”He appeared to have first walked past the officer and then he turned to his right, and saw him and discharged several rounds.”
The officer who tragically lost his life has been identified as Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh who had served with the New York City Police Department for over three years. “He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Ms. Tisch, a police official, at a press conference. “He died as he lived. A hero.”
Victims Identified,NFL Headquarters Affected
Blackstone,the company where the real estate executive worked,confirmed the identity of the victim as Wesley LePatner,a senior managing director. The labor union representing security personnel also confirmed the death of security officer Aland Etienne. The Rudin family, owners of the building and Rudin Management, acknowledged that one of their employees was a victim but withheld the name at the family’s request.The NFL’s headquarters are located on the 33rd floor of the building. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a memo to staff, confirming that an employee at the league’s offices had sustained serious injuries and was in stable condition at a hospital.Thankfully, all other NFL personnel were reported safe. Goodell did not disclose the name of the injured employee.
The motive behind the attack remains under inquiry, but the revelation that the gunman may have intended to target the NFL offices adds another layer of complexity to this tragic event.
