New York Man Charged in Fatal Crash Involving Four Children
A man from New York is charged in connection with the deaths of four children in a car crash on Interstate 95 in Nassau County, Florida. The incident occurred on July 1, 2023, around 4 a.m., just south of the Florida-Georgia state line.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Marvin Funes, 25, stopped his vehicle in the travel lanes to take a picture of the “Welcome to Florida” sign. Funes reduced his speed to 1-2 miles per hour. The highway has a minimum speed limit of 40 mph. Consequently, another vehicle traveling between 65-78 mph collided with Funes’ car from behind.
The crash happened at the Scrubby Bluff Bridge, where visibility for southbound drivers is limited. Four children in the back seat of Funes’ vehicle died as a result of the crash. The car was intended for three passengers, and three of the children were not wearing seatbelts during the incident.
Funes had a revoked driver’s license at the time of the crash. He faces four counts of culpable negligence resulting in child death and four counts of driving with a suspended license leading to death. He was extradited from New York to Nassau County earlier this month and is currently held on a bond of $270,016.
