WASHINGTON (EPD) — The New York Times garnered four awards, while The New Yorker received three and The Washington Post two as the 2025 Pulitzer Prizes were announced Monday.
The Pulitzer Prize for Public Service,considered the most prestigious category,was awarded to ProPublica,a non-profit investigative journalism organization. Jurors recognized their reporting on the potential dangers faced by pregnant women in certain U.S. states.
Marjorie Miller, the prize administrator, noted the challenging habitat for journalists and publishers in the United States. “They face legal challenges, book bans, and attacks on their legitimacy,” Miller stated.”These attacks aim to silence critics and undermine the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the press.”
The New York Times’ awards recognized coverage of the war in Sudan, the opioid epidemic in Baltimore, and U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. Doug Mills, a New York Times photographer, also received a Pulitzer for his images capturing the attempted attack on former U.S.President Donald Trump last year.
The New Yorker’s prizes acknowledged commentary on the conflict in Gaza, a podcast examining civilian deaths in Iraq, and photographs depicting a torture prison in Syria.
The Washington Post was honored for its reporting on the assassination attempt against Trump and the “fearless” cartoons of Ann Telnaes. telnaes reportedly left the Post in january after editors declined to publish a cartoon deemed critical of both Trump and Jeff Bezos, the owner of The Washington Post.
The Wall Street Journal received recognition for its coverage of tech billionaire Elon Musk. The Houston Chronicle was awarded for its reporting on hazardous level crossings. Reuters news agency was honored for its reporting on the production of synthetic opioid fentanyl.
