New Zealand Knock Out Sri Lanka from T20 World Cup with 61-Run Win

New Zealand Knock Out Sri Lanka from T20 World Cup with 61-Run Win

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – New Zealand extinguished the hopes of the host nation, Sri Lanka, at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Wednesday, securing a decisive 61-run victory in a Super 8s clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium. The result eliminates Sri Lanka from contention, while bolstering New Zealand’s chances of reaching the semi-finals.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to bowl, a decision that initially appeared to pay dividends as New Zealand struggled to build a substantial innings. However, a remarkable recovery fueled by a 80-run seventh-wicket partnership between captain Mitchell Santner and Cole McChonchie propelled the Black Caps to a competitive total of 168-7.

The Sri Lankan bowlers had initially dominated, reducing New Zealand to 84-6 and then 90-6 after 15 overs. Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera and spinner Maheesh Theekshana were particularly effective, each claiming three wickets. But McChonchie’s aggressive hitting, including 18 runs off one over from Chameera, and Santner’s composed innings shifted the momentum dramatically.

Santner finished with 47 runs off 26 deliveries, hitting four sixes and two boundaries, while McChonchie contributed 31 off 23 deliveries, including two sixes and three boundaries. The late surge proved crucial, providing New Zealand with a total that ultimately proved too challenging for Sri Lanka.

In reply, Sri Lanka faltered, posting a disappointing 107-8. The innings never gained traction, with early wickets falling to New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack. Matt Henry struck first, dismissing opener Pathum Nissanka with the very first ball of the innings, setting a negative tone for the hosts. Charith Asalanka, recalled to the side for this crucial match, also departed quickly, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 6-2.

Left-arm spinner Rachin Ravindra was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, delivering a career-best performance of 4-27. Henry added two wickets for just three runs, further tightening the screws on the Sri Lankan batting lineup. Kamindu Mendis top-scored for Sri Lanka with 31, but lacked support from the rest of the order.

The match represented a must-win situation for Sri Lanka, following their earlier defeat to England in Group 2. With this loss, their hopes of progressing to the semi-finals are extinguished. England have already secured their place in the last four after winning both of their Super 8s matches.

New Zealand’s victory places them in a strong position, but their semi-final berth is not yet guaranteed. They will need to defeat England in their final Super 8s match on Friday to secure their place. Pakistan, who are yet to play Sri Lanka, could potentially overtake New Zealand on net run rate if they achieve a significant victory.

“It’s embarrassing to disappoint the home crowd, they’ve been very supportive,” said Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, acknowledging the disappointment of the result. “We wanted to restrict them to 130 but, to be honest, they played really well so we must give them credit.”

The dramatic turnaround in New Zealand’s innings, sparked by the partnership between Santner and McChonchie, proved to be the defining moment of the match. Their ability to counterattack and wrest control from the Sri Lankan bowlers ultimately proved decisive, sending the co-hosts crashing out of the tournament and keeping their own semi-final aspirations alive.
