The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)⁢ has reduced the number of arrivals and departures at Newark to⁣ manage delays and ensure safety. This action, while causing United Airlines some short-term setbacks, is expected to improve reliability. The airport is operating with one runway‍ due to construction.

Kirby addressed the situation at the Wall Street Journal’s future of Everything event, advising ⁤travelers to take⁢ advantage of the lower prices and less crowded⁤ conditions.Newark is a⁣ major hub for United, handling nearly 70% of the airport’s flights. The ⁢airline has already cut 35 round-trip⁤ flights per day to maintain schedule reliability.

Recent outages at the Philadelphia TRACON Area C, which guides flights ⁢in and out of Newark, have contributed to travel disruptions. These issues have highlighted the strain on the ⁤air traffic control system, citing staffing shortages, outdated technology, and underinvestment.

The FAA issued a temporary order restricting Newark to 28 arrivals and 28 departures per hour until June 15, when construction is expected to ease. Afterward, the airport will operate at 34 ‍arrivals and departures per hour until Oct. 25. Normally, Newark handles 77 flights per hour.

“There’s a lot more seats available,it’s going to be the cheapest it’s probably ever going to be in history,” Kirby said Thursday at‍ The Wall street Journal’s future of Everything event. “I don’t really like that, but you ought to book, and it’s going to‍ be the least crowded.”
