“Former employees say that such an incident happened for the first time in the 30s since working here. There has never been such a case. Everyone is in shock. Since we have no children’s stationary department, an ambulance was called, and the newborn baby was taken to Kaunas University Clinic.”

It is believed that the girl was just born, the umbilical cord was cut. Alongside the child, spruce branches were also left, possibly as a symbol of success or happiness.

According to the doctors, someone knocked on the unit door a couple of times, and then the staff found the abandoned infant. There was no one around.

The infant was wrapped in a woman’s sweater, there were also a couple of blankets, a woman’s scarf. It happened at 11:50 pm in Kaishadori, Berzhyno Street, at the door of Kaishadori Hospital.

Father, mother, guardian, or other child’s legal representative, leaving a minor child who is unable to take care of himself, without the necessary care with the intent to get rid of him, is punishable by forced labor or restriction of freedom, or arrest, or imprisonment for up to two years.

David Aiduk, head of the Kaunas District Children’s Rights Protection Department of the State Children’s Rights and Adoption Service, says that the incident in Kaishadores is an emergency in Lithuania.

“Life is valuable, so even in a difficult situation, when deciding not to raise a child, the most important thing is to keep his life. So, if parents decide not to raise a newborn, there is a chance to leave the child in a safe environment, not at the hospital door!”

“Currently, the newborn is in safety at the Kaunas Clinic, where the doctors care about him. When the baby is ready and can be prescribed from a medical facility, he will find guardians who will continue to take care of him,” said Aiduk, head of the Kaunas District Children’s Rights Protection Department of the State Children’s Rights and Adoption Service.

Parental identity is unknown and law enforcement agencies will continue to investigate the case.
