Sweden Launches Nationwide Treatment to Protect Infants from Severe RSV infection
Table of Contents
RSV is a highly contagious seasonal virus that affects many young children every year and can cause severe respiratory disease, especially in infants. In Sweden, 2,500-3,000 children become so ill that they require hospitalization for care and respiratory assistance annually. Approximately 250-300 children per year require highly specialized care in pediatric intensive care units.
though, this situation may now change. Swedish healthcare is launching a treatment effort designed to greatly reduce the risk of infants developing severe RSV infection. All newborn children - approximately 65,000 per year – are now offered a preventative treatment with Beyfortus, a drug containing antibodies, administered via injection.
How the Treatment is Administered
– The injection is given while the child is at the hospital after birth or during a return visit, says Henrik Forsgren, chief physician in child and youth health care in Region Gävleborg.
The treatment effect lasts for at least six months, providing protection during the most critical period.
– It is indeed when the child is between zero and three months old and still has very small airways that the risk is greatest of being severely affected by RSV infection, says Henrik Forsgren.
Slightly older children, up to two years old, who have severe underlying heart or lung disease and are at increased risk of severe RSV infection will also be offered treatment.
Impact and Expert Opinion
Henrik Forsgren is very pleased with the introduction of this treatment in Sweden and believes it will have significant positive effects.Fewer children will become severely ill and require hospitalization. This translates to reduced suffering for children and their families, as well as relief for the pediatric healthcare system, which will be less burdened during RSV seasons.
– in other countries where treatment has been introduced, the number of children needing hospitalization for RSV infection has decreased by 80 percent. If we achieve that effect hear, it will make a huge difference. I see it as fully revolutionary, a real Game Changer, says Henrik Forsgren.
Understanding RSV: What You Need to Know
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. However, it can be serious, especially for infants and older adults. Here’s a breakdown of key information:
- Symptoms: Runny nose, decreased appetite, cough, sneezing, fever, wheezing. In severe cases, it can lead to bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lungs) and pneumonia.
- Transmission: RSV spreads through droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also spread through contact with contaminated surfaces.
- Risk Factors: Premature infants, infants with underlying heart or lung conditions, and infants with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe RSV infection.
- Diagnosis: A nasal swab can be used to detect RSV.
- Treatment (Historically): Primarily supportive care, including oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, and mechanical ventilation in severe cases.
