Newcastle Transfer News: Rivals Break Pact on £26m Deal
Yoane Wissa Refuses to Train as Brentford Close Door on Newcastle transfer
Brentford forward yoane Wissa has reportedly stopped training with the club and is understood to be disappointed after Brentford rejected a fresh bid from Newcastle United, effectively closing the door on a potential summer transfer.
Newcastle’s Pursuit Hits a Roadblock
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Newcastle had their latest offer, exceeding £30 million, turned down by Brentford. This rejection has led to the Bees stating that any further transfer discussions are now off the table.
Wissa, who has been a key player for Brentford, is said to be unhappy with the club’s stance. He reportedly believed he had a gentleman’s agreement in place that woudl allow him to leave for a fee of £26 million. The player feels this understanding has been broken by Brentford’s decision to reject Newcastle’s improved offer.
Jacobs shared on X (formerly Twitter): “Brentford have closed the door on a Yoane Wissa exit after #NUFC raised their bid to £30m+. Wissa refusing to train and disappointed by Brentford’s stance. Player feels Brentford have broken a pact allowing him to leave for £26m and wants #UCL.”
wissa’s Desire for Champions League Football
The report further suggests that Wissa is eager to play Champions League football, viewing this summer as a possibly last prospect at his age to secure such a move to a major club. This ambition was reportedly communicated to Brentford’s hierarchy during face-to-face discussions in London, following Wissa’s departure from the club’s pre-season tour in Lisbon.
Wissa had previously shown loyalty to Brentford, agreeing to stay for an additional year last summer following the departure of Ivan toney and an injury to Igor Thiago. He reiterated his commitment in the winter, scoring 20 goals across all competitions last season. He had given his word to remain fully committed this summer, provided an exit was sanctioned.
Though, Wissa has now informed Brentford that he wishes to leave and will not sign a new contract. To his disappointment, the club has informed Newcastle that they must meet a valuation exceeding £50 million for any deal to be considered.
Despite this firm stance, the report indicates that Brentford are actively searching for potential replacements for Wissa, suggesting that while the door is currently closed, the club may still be open to negotiations if their valuation is met.
In contrast to Wissa’s situation, teammate Bryan Mbeumo reportedly expressed his willingness to stay at Brentford if a move to Manchester United did not materialize, and ultimately departed on good terms. This highlights the differing approaches of the two key forwards regarding their futures.
