Newcastle united are holding off on any move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson until the future of Alexander Isak is resolved, according too recent reports. The situation leaves Eddie Howe’s attacking options in a state of flux ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa.
Isak’s Future at St. James’ Park
Isak is currently absent from Newcastle training following a rejected £110 million bid from Liverpool. The Swedish international is highly unlikely to feature against Aston Villa as his future remains uncertain. The club’s hierarchy are clearly navigating a complex situation, weighing the financial benefits of a potential sale against the loss of a key attacking asset.Newcastle had previously targeted RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as a potential replacement, but the young striker ultimately opted for a move to Manchester United, further complicating matters.
Chelsea’s Willingness to Sell Nicolas Jackson
Chelsea have reportedly informed Jackson that he is available for transfer, perhaps offering Newcastle a solution to their striker dilemma. The 24-year-old scored 10 Premier League goals last season, but endured a significant goal drought, finding the net only once in five months between December and May.
Jackson trained alone on friday and was omitted from the squad for Chelsea’s friendly victory over Bayer Leverkusen, signaling a clear shift in his status at Stamford Bridge. The arrival of Liam Delap from Ipswich and Joao Pedro from Brighton has pushed him down the pecking order, leading to a belief that his development has stalled under Enzo Maresca.

A Complex Relationship at Chelsea
Jackson’s time at Chelsea as joining from Villarreal in 2023 has been marked by a mixed reception from supporters. While his work rate and occasional moments of brilliance are appreciated, inconsistency and questions surrounding his temperament have led to a complex relationship with the fanbase. The club are also considering offers for Christopher Nkunku, with RB Leipzig expressing interest in re-signing the French forward. Leipzig are reportedly keen to include Nkunku in any deal for Xavi Simons,a versatile attacking midfielder who can play either as an attacking midfielder or on the wing. Simons represents a potentially more flexible attacking option than Nkunku, who has struggled with injuries and has only managed six Premier League goals as his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s defensive Concerns
Beyond the attacking reshuffle, Chelsea are also addressing defensive vulnerabilities. The club are actively seeking a central defender following Levi Colwill’s surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
Colwill is expected to be sidelined for six to nine months, leaving a significant void in Chelsea’s backline. While 19-year-old Jorrel Hato has been signed from Ajax, Maresca is prioritizing the acquisition of a more experienced defender to provide immediate cover and stability.
