Newcastle United is targeting Ajax defender Aaron Bouwman as a potential reinforcement for the upcoming transfer windows, according to regional reporting by Chronicle Live. The Premier League club is actively scouting for a new right-footed central defender to succeed 34-year-old Fabian Schär, whose contract runs until mid-2027.
Newcastle United Targets Aaron Bouwman After Sean Steur Transfer
The interest in Bouwman follows Newcastle United’s acquisition of midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax during the summer transfer window for a fee reported by VoetbalPrimeur at nearly 25 million euros, while FCUpdate puts the figure at 23,5 million euros. Technical director Ross Wilson is shaping the club’s transfer strategy for January and the summer of 2027, placing the 19-year-old defender high on a list of young targets.
The name of Bouwman was also put forward to Newcastle United by agents, and the defender shares the same management agency as Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle. At Newcastle United, Bouwman could potentially form a partnership with Sven Botman, who previously played in the youth academy of Ajax but never officially featured for the Amsterdam club’s first team. Meanwhile, Sean Steur has made 7 appearances and started 3 matches since arriving in England, and recently noted that he and Bouwman grew up together at Ajax up to the first team and made their Champions League debuts together. Steur also mentioned regarding the collision that he was initially startled by the impact from Van Bommel, adding, Aaron is a strong boy, I think he will return faster than expected.

Injury Setback Precedes Renewed Scouting Interest
Bouwman suffered a severe chest injury and a bruised lung following a collision with PSV forward Ruben van Bommel during a match last month, as detailed by VoetbalNieuws. The incident sidelined the defender for the remainder of September, halting a breakout season where he logged 1,042 minutes across 14 appearances and scored one goal, according to FootballTransfers. Ajax tied Bouwman to a contract until mid-2030, and FootballTransfers estimates his current transfer value between 3,8 million and 5,6 million euros, while VoetbalNieuws and VoetbalPrimeur place his market value around 7,7 million euros.
FootballTransfers records that Bouwman’s skill value rose from 46.1 to 51.1 over a year, while his estimated transfer value stands at 5,6 million euros, up from 3,8 million euros at the start of 2026. The 1.98-meter-tall central defender is from Haarlem, and Thilo Kehrer filled in following his injury.
Chelsea and Newcastle Monitor Ajax Teenager Bouwman
Beyond interest from Tyneside, Chelsea is also monitoring the Dutch teenager, as reported by FCUpdate. Bouwman could return to action for Ajax this coming weekend against NEC, where scouts from Newcastle United will closely observe his physical and tactical development.
