Born in Valleyfield, NL on September 14, 1942, Barbour’s love for music blossomed at a young age. His talent was evident early on, leading him to become assistant organist at the Anglican Cathedral of St.John the Baptist at just 19 years old under the guidance of Dr. Donald Cook.
For four decades,Barbour served as the director of the Singing Legionnaires,a group that united men through song and fellowship. he also led The Silver Chord singers, a choir for seniors founded by Memorial University, for eight years. His musical talents graced numerous St. John’s churches,where he served as organist and choir director,bringing joy to countless weddings and funerals with his music.
“Music lingers on in the soul long after the last refrain,” said his wife, Louise.
Beyond his musical contributions, Barbour was known for his humility, gentle humor, and unwavering love for his family.He cherished spending time with his wife Louise, whom he married in 1969, and their two children, Lisa and Jonathan. He delighted in taking his children and nieces and nephews on outings and sharing his family’s heritage with visitors to their home in Newtown.
A talented artist, Barbour also enjoyed painting and drawing, creating a special Christmas card illustration for his family each year. he was an avid social media user, connecting with friends and family near and far.Barbour’s warm personality and infectious laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., on Sunday, December 29th, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place on monday, december 30th, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. from the carnell Memorial Chapel, followed by a reception. Donations in Barbour’s memory might potentially be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the SPCA.
