Aurora resident Joe Costa, who attempted to visit the store later in the day, described the traffic as “horrible” and indicated he would reconsider future visits if conditions persisted.
The new Costco is located on harry Walker Parkway South. Traffic backups extended onto Mulock Drive, with cars queuing to turn into the Costco parking lot. Numerous residents voiced their complaints on social media, citing ample delays on Harry Walker Parkway South and at its intersection with Davis drive.
Town of Newmarket Response and Traffic Projections
The Town of Newmarket acknowledged the opening-day congestion and assured residents that traffic flow should return to projected levels. According to town officials, the high volume of shoppers from across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) contributed to the initial gridlock.
“The Town of Newmarket would like to thank the public for their patience,” a town statement read. However, officials also indicated they will be closely monitoring traffic conditions in the coming months.
If that volume continues with the traffic issues, itS going to be very, very difficult for people to access that store,
a town commissioner stated. Newmarket will compare actual traffic data to forecasts to determine if further mitigation measures are necessary.
