News Directory 3: Thank you for joining us, Brittany. Can you tell us about the “Books for Newport” event and how it came together post-Hurricane Helene?
Brittany Smith: Thank you for having me. The “Books for Newport” event was a collective effort from various community members and organizations aimed at providing support to those affected by Hurricane Helene. We recognized that many residents lost not only their physical homes but also their cherished books and personal items. We wanted to create a space where the community could come together, feel uplifted, and have access to reading materials that can offer comfort and a much-needed distraction.
News Directory 3: Why do you think books are particularly important in times of crisis?
Brittany Smith: Books have a unique way of providing solace. They can transport readers to different worlds, allowing them to escape their current situation, even if just for a little while. For children, especially, having access to stories and literature can foster imagination and resilience. We truly believe that reading plays a significant role in healing and coping during tough times.
News Directory 3: How has the community responded to the need for books and reading materials?
Brittany Smith: The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Communities have come together in remarkable ways, contributing books and supplies. It’s heartwarming to see individuals, families, and local businesses rally to support one another. It’s not just about the books, but the shared commitment to uplift those struggling right now.
News Directory 3: Jennifer Ellison from the Cocke County Career to Cradle Coalition mentioned the pre-existing challenges in Cocke County. How do you see reading combating some of these issues?
Brittany Smith: Reading is foundational to children’s development and can significantly impact their educational success and future opportunities. By promoting literacy and access to books, we’re helping to lay a groundwork that empowers children to dream bigger and achieve more. Programs like C5 are essential in bridging these gaps and aiding families in accessing the necessary resources for a better future.
News Directory 3: I understand that despite challenges, local business owners like Deann Hines contributed to this event. Can you speak to the community spirit you’ve witnessed?
Brittany Smith: Absolutely. Deann’s commitment is a testament to the resilience of our community. Many local businesses have suffered losses but continue to lend their support. This solidarity showcases the strength of Newport—everyone recognizes that by helping others, we strengthen our whole community. We are all in this together.
News Directory 3: What are the plans moving forward for the 21st Century Packhorse Librarian?

We’re excited to hold another event in Chuckey on November 23rd and then in Hampton on November 29th. The goal is to reach as many families as possible and continue fostering a love for reading while addressing the immediate needs of our community.
