Newsom Files Civil Rights Complaint Against Dr. Oz Over Fraud Allegations
California Governor Gavin Newsom‘s office filed a civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday, accusing Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz of discrimination. The complaint stems from a video in which Oz alleges members of the Los Angeles Armenian community orchestrated large-scale health care fraud.
The dispute, which began on social media earlier this week, escalated with Newsom’s formal action. The governor’s office argues Oz ”spewed baseless and racially charged allegations” that could discourage participation in hospice and home care programs within the Armenian community. They claim the allegations have already negatively impacted local businesses, citing dampened business at an Armenian bakery featured in the video.
The video, posted on social media, shows Oz visiting the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles and pointing to a four-block radius as the alleged center of the fraud.
As of January 30, 2026, Oz and CMS had not responded to requests for comment regarding the complaint or the content of the video. They have not publicly released details confirming the alleged fraud.
This conflict represents a new front in the ongoing tension between Governor Newsom and the Trump management.
