Newsom Warns Trump’s Actions Threaten democracy Nationwide
updated June 10, 2025
California Gov.Gavin Newsom has accused President Donald Trump of attempting to dismantle democracy across the United States, starting with actions in los Angeles. Newsom is urging Americans to stand up against the president’s policies.
Newsom’s address followed a federal judge’s decision not to block Trump from federalizing the California National Guard and deploying U.S. Marines in Los Angeles. The move comes amid ongoing protests in the city, where Mayor Karen Bass has declared an 8 p.m. curfew in the downtown area for a fifth consecutive night.
“This isn’t just about protests here in Los Angeles,” Newsom said. “When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation. This is about all of us.” He added, “California may be first, but it clearly will not end here.”
Newsom said the National Guard troops deployed by Trump are now serving as armed bodyguards for ICE agents during immigration raids, in addition to protecting federal buildings in los Angeles County.
Newsom believes Trump is challenging the foundations of American democracy. “Democracy is under assault before our eyes,” he said. ”This moment we have feared has arrived.”
Newsom criticized House speaker Mike johnson for allegedly abandoning checks and balances on the executive branch. he said, “The rule of law has increasingly been given away to the rule of Don.”
Despite polls showing support for Trump’s immigration policies, Newsom is calling on those who oppose the president to continue protesting peacefully. “Do not give in to him,” he urged.
