The Unexpected Link: COVID-19 Vaccines and Cancer Immunotherapy
COVID-19 vaccines,initially developed to combat the SARS-CoV-2 virus,may offer an unexpected benefit: boosting the immune system’s ability to fight cancer,especially when used in conjunction with immunotherapy.New results presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) meeting in Berlin on October 2023, suggest a correlation between mRNA COVID-19 vaccination and improved survival rates in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer and metastatic melanoma.

Researchers have long sought ways to enhance immunotherapy’s efficacy, ofen struggling to find the right balance between immune stimulation and harmful overreaction.
“I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Stephanie Dougan, an associate professor of cancer immunology and virology at dana-Farber Cancer Institute, who was not involved in the study. “There is scientific logic as to why this might work.”
Study Findings: Improved Survival Rates
The study,led by Dr. Adam Grippin of The University of Texas MD Anderson cancer Center, analyzed data from over 1,000 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer who received immunotherapy between 2019 and 2023. Researchers compared survival rates between those who received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine within 100 days of starting immunotherapy and those who did not.

The results showed a significant difference in survival. Among the lung cancer patients who received the vaccine, half were still alive at the study endpoint, with a median survival of approximately three years - almost double that of unvaccinated patients (1.5 years). Similarly, patients with metastatic melanoma who were vaccinated before treatment had not yet reached median survival after more than three years of follow-up, compared to just over two years for unvaccinated
