Updated June 01, 2025
Aaron Sexton, a former Ulster rugby player, is setting his sights on a career in the NFL through the International Player Pathway (IPP) program. Inspired by the success of fellow IPP alumni like Louis Rees-Zammit,now with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Charlie Smyth of the New Orleans Saints,Sexton is determined to make his mark in American football.
Sexton, 24, saeid his time with Ulster was fulfilling, but the NFL prospect felt like a “now or never” situation. He didn’t want to regret not pursuing his NFL aspirations later in life. He will be trying out as a wide receiver and punt/kick returner.
Sexton’s speed is a key asset. As an 18-year-old, he broke Irish national sprint records in the 100 and 200 meters. He believes his speed, combined with his rugby ball-handling skills, makes him a strong candidate for the NFL.
“There are definately transferable skills,” Sexton said. “There’s my speed and then the kick/punt returning is just like being in the backfield in rugby.” he added that he is focused on refining his skills ahead of Pro Day.
Pro Day,a notable audition for the IPP class of 2025,is scheduled for march 26 at the University of south Florida. Scouts from all 32 NFL teams will be present, making it a pivotal moment for Sexton to showcase his abilities.
“It’s the fastest job interview in the world!” Sexton said. He knows a fast 40-yard dash could open doors, but he also needs to perform well in other “measurables” like weight, height, hand size, wingspan, bench press, vertical jump, and broad jump. Position-specific drills will follow.
What’s next
Sexton will continue his intense preparation for Pro Day, focusing on both physical and mental readiness. His performance on March 26 will determine whether he secures a coveted playing contract in the NFL.
