Updated June 10, 2025
The NHL scouting combine buzzed with anticipation for the upcoming draft, were surprises are expected. Ninety NHL hopefuls underwent interviews, fitness tests and team dinners as scouts and executives prepared for what could be an unpredictable first round on June 27 and 28.
One scout suggested that as many as 16 to 18 players could be top-10 material, making for tough decisions. Another executive noted an “embarrassment of riches” among forwards available early in the draft. While defenseman Matthew Schaefer of the Erie Otters is considered a likely No. 1 pick for the New York Islanders, the subsequent selections remain uncertain.
Carter bear, a forward for the Everett Silvertips, emerged as a potential wild card. Despite an Achilles tendon injury in March that sidelined him from fitness testing, Bear’s 40 goals and 82 points in 65 games have drawn notable attention. He is expected to be healthy for NHL training camps in the fall.
Recent drafts have seen teams make unexpected choices, such as Juraj Slafkovsky‘s selection by Montreal in 2022. Another surprise could be in store this year.
During meet and greets, some NHL teams surprised prospects by showing them unflattering game clips. Carlos handel, a Halifax Mooseheads defenseman, said the Carolina Hurricanes showed him some bad plays and asked how he reacts to them and what his coach wants him to do in those situations.
“Carolina did that,” Handel said.”They showed me some bad clips, and wanted, for example, how I react [to it] but also they wanted to know how my coach, for example, wants me to attack there and what my opinion about that [play] was.”
Lynden Lakovic of Moose Jaw also found some interviews more intimidating then others. “Most of the [talks] were fun,” Lakovic said. “But there were a couple ones that were a little bit more intimidating.”
The Nashville Predators, who did not expect to be a lottery team, hold the No. 5 overall pick after finishing the season 30-44-8. They also have two later first-round picks. James Hagens, Anton Frondell or Jake O’Brien could be available at No. 5 to strengthen Nashville’s center position. Winger Porter Martone would also be a solid fit.
The Predators signed Steven Stamkos last summer, and he could mentor any young player entering the league.Nashville aims to return to the playoffs next season, and their selections with the 23rd and 26th overall picks will indicate their strategy.
