January 23, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

New Jersey Devils: Power Play Surge, Markstrom Injury; Columbus Blue Jackets: Adam Fantilli’s Hat Trick

The New Jersey Devils hosted the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night, securing a convincing 5-1 victory thanks to a dynamic power play that tallied three goals. However, the game was marred by an injury to Boston goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who left the game in the second period after colliding with a Bruin forward. He did not return, and his status moving forward is uncertain.

Nico Hischier led the Devils’ power play charge, figureheading all three goals with one tally and two assists to his credit. Dawson Mercer, skating on the third line with Timo Meier, netted the two even-strength goals, with Meier adding two shots and a block in a solid outing. Dougie Hamilton also contributed, scoring a power play goal and adding an assist, three shots, two PIMs, and a hit.

Jake Allen stepped into the crease for the Devils and earned the win, stopping all 16 shots he faced, as the team was trailing upon his entry.

For the Bruins, David Pastrnak extended his hot streak, assisting on their lone goal and adding five shots and a hit. Jeremy Swayman was in goal for Boston, allowing four goals on 29 shots before being relieved after the second period.

In other action, the Columbus Blue Jackets visited the Toronto Maple Leafs and emerged victorious with a 5-1 win. Elvis Merzlikins was stellar in net, stopping 28 of 29 shots for the win. Adam Fantilli stole the show, scoring a hat trick, including the empty-net goal, to lead Columbus to victory. Luca Del Bel Belluz also stood out, registering a goal and an assist in the win. James van Riemsdyk and Zach Werenski contributed with multi-point games, while Dennis Hildeby took the loss for Toronto, allowing four goals on 18 shots.

Matthew Knies left the game in the second period with an awkward hit along the boards and did not return.

Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Jets secured a 3-2 overtime win against the Colorado Avalanche, thanks to Ryan Hartman’s slap shot from the top of the circle. Gabriel Vilardi and Morgan Barron scored the other goals for Winnipeg, while Neal Pionk had seven goals on the season, just three back from his career-high of 10. Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves for the win, while Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon scored for Colorado. Makar moved back into first place in the point race among defensemen, but he has played one more game than Zach Werenski and seven more than Quinn Hughes.

In other news, the New York Rangers announced that forwards Sean Monahan and Cole Sillinger are day-to-day, but the team managed a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, led by Adam Fantilli’s hat trick. Elvis Merzlikins was stellar in net, stopping 28 of 29 shots for the win.

In injury updates, Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin suffered a setback and is now week-to-week. The Toronto Maple Leafs placed forward Max Pacioretty on injured reserve retroactive to January 18th. The Ottawa Senators announced that forward Josh Norris will miss the weekend with an upper-body injury, opening the door for Shane Pinto to see increased ice time.

Finally, the Minnesota Wild received positive news as Kirill Kaprizov and Jared Spurgeon returned to practice, potentially signaling their return to the lineup in the coming games.

As the Devils celebrate thier dominant win, the ⁢focus inevitably⁣ shifts to the health ‌of Jacob Markstrom, whose injury casts a shadow on the Bruins’ ⁣immediate future. This game served as a reminder of the ‌Devils’ offensive firepower, especially their ability to capitalize on power play opportunities.
