Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh is advocating for increased representation of Asian legendary characters in Hollywood, pointing to the phenomenal success of the Chinese film “Ni Cha” as a prime example. “Ni Cha,” and it’s sequel, demonstrate a global appetite for stories rooted in diverse mythologies, and Yeoh believes these narratives offer a valuable possibility for cross-cultural understanding.
“They are warriors, and an honor for Chinese myths,” Yeoh said while voicing the mother of Ni Cha in the English-dubbed version of the film, as reported by Reuters. She draws parallels between these figures and well-known Western mythological heroes like Zeus and Thor, emphasizing that exploring different cultural myths fosters a deeper appreciation for the world’s diverse heritage.
‘Ni Cha 2’ Shatters box Office Records
“Ni cha 2,” distributed by A24, builds upon the foundation laid by the original 1999 film, which grossed over $700 million worldwide. The sequel,directed by Yu yang and inspired by 16th-century tales penned by Shu Chung Lin,has achieved unprecedented success. The english-dubbed version, titled “Installing the Gods,” debuted in American theaters on Friday and quickly surpassed Pixar’s ”Inside Out 2″ to become the highest-grossing film in the world historically.
As of this writing, ”Ni Cha 2″ has generated a staggering 12.3 billion yuan (approximately $1.69 billion) in ticket sales, including pre-sales and international revenue, securing its place as the eighth highest-grossing film of all time.
