Niall Horan has revealed that he rewrote the lyrics to his song End of an Era
following the death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the 32-year-old singer explained that he felt he had to
return to the track after Payne passed away in 2024 at the age of 31, following a fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
Horan described the decision to alter the song as the right thing to do
given the circumstances.
The Evolution of End of an Era
The song was not originally intended as a tribute. Horan noted that the track had been written a long time ago and underwent several iterations, stating that they wrote the song about four times
.

Initially, the meaning of the song focused on transition and growth. Horan explained that the original version meant all right, we’re moving on
and was centered on looking toward the future while viewing the past with nostalgia and happiness for what had been achieved.
However, after the death of Payne, Horan felt the need to pivot the song’s direction to address the loss.
Collaborative Process and Shared History
Horan worked on the track with songwriters Julian Bunetta and John Ryan. The collaborators share a deep history with the members of One Direction, having contributed to the group’s final studio album, Made In The A.M., released before the band went on hiatus in 2016.
The emotional weight of the rewriting process was amplified by the personal connections the songwriters had with Payne. Horan mentioned that Bunetta and Ryan lived next door to Payne for a significant period and that the group had grown up together.
For the three of us, it was actually quite a crazy experience to have to write a song like that, because you don’t ever expect to.
Niall Horan
Horan recalled a specific moment during the recording process when he and John Ryan stepped outside the studio for 20 minutes to write the new lyrics, though they chose to keep the original chorus.
One Direction Context
The connection between the artists dates back to 2010, when Horan, Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik were formed into One Direction on the ITV singing competition The X Factor.
The group rose to global prominence throughout the 2010s before entering their hiatus in 2016, leaving a legacy of collaborative work with producers like Bunetta and Ryan.
