Santa Claus Comes in Summer: Students donate to Cancer Research and Learn About Prevention
Table of Contents
Every year, Santa Claus delivers gifts in December. But this year, he came in July, bearing a special gift of generosity and knowledge for students in Gößweinstein. Pupils from the local elementary and middle school, who raised 500 euros during their Nikolaus campaign, presented their donation to the Comprehensive Cancer Center Erlangen-Emn (CCC Erlangen-EMN) for cancer research.
A Gift of Hope: Students Support Cancer Research
The students’ fundraising efforts culminated in a check presentation to PD Dr. Hanna Hübner, a research assistant at the women’s clinic, and Laura Bernhardt, project manager at CCC Erlangen-Emn. The donation will directly support cancer research initiatives at the Erlangen University Hospital.
“This donation showcases the remarkable commitment of children and adolescents - a vibrant example of how young people can take obligation for health, research, and prevention,” lauded Laura Bernhardt. “We are incredibly grateful for their support.”
This act of kindness highlights the students’ understanding of the importance of cancer research and their willingness to contribute to a cause that affects so many. Their efforts serve as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that even small actions can make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer.
Interactive Learning: Exploring Cancer Research and Prevention
The donation handover was not just about giving; it was also an opportunity for learning. Employees from the CCC Erlangen-Emn and members of the Digionko project team brought their Digionko prevention mobile – a mobile laboratory for cancer screening – to the school. This innovative setup allowed students to engage with the world of cancer research and prevention in an interactive and engaging way.
Hands-On Science: Microscopes, Pipettes, and Heart Activity
The students had the chance to explore various scientific tools and techniques. They peered through microscopes, experimented with pipettes, and even measured their own heart activity. This hands-on experience provided them with a glimpse into the daily life of scientists and researchers working to understand and combat cancer.
Sun Safety Education: Protecting Against UV Radiation
With the summer holidays approaching, the focus also turned to UV protection. the students participated in an activity where they created UV-sensitive bracelets. These bracelets change color when exposed to sunlight, providing a visual reminder of the presence and intensity of UV radiation.Through this activity, the young participants learned about the importance of sun protection for maintaining their health. They received practical tips on how to handle solar radiation responsibly, including wearing sunscreen, seeking shade during peak hours, and wearing protective clothing. This knowledge empowers them to make informed decisions about their sun exposure and reduce their risk of skin cancer later in life.
