Nick Arbuckle Leads Toronto Argonauts to 19th Grey Cup Victory Against Winnipeg
Toronto Argonauts Win 19th Grey Cup Title
On November 17, 2024, the Toronto Argonauts defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 41-24 in the Grey Cup, held at B.C. Place in Vancouver. This victory marked the Argonauts’ 19th championship title.
Nick Arbuckle, the backup quarterback, stepped in after starter Chad Kelly suffered an ankle injury during the Eastern Final. Arbuckle completed 26 of 37 passes for 252 yards and threw two touchdown passes in the second half. He earned the title of outstanding player of the game.
Arbuckle expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his journey. “You couldn’t script this,” he said, highlighting the significance of overcoming challenges as a team.
The Argonauts have a strong record, winning their last eight Grey Cup appearances since 1991. They hold an undefeated record of 8-0 against Winnipeg in the finals, having previously beaten them in multiple years, including 2022.
Running back Ka’Deem Carey praised Arbuckle’s performance, stating, “Nick did that, he won us a dang championship.” Carey contributed 79 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
This was Winnipeg’s fifth consecutive Grey Cup appearance. Coach Mike O’Shea reflected on the loss, noting the difficulty of not winning the last game. He remarked, “It was a hell of a ride this year.”
In the game, Arbuckle connected with Dejon Brissett for a 17-yard touchdown, putting Toronto ahead 24-16. Moments later, DaShaun Amos intercepted a pass from Zach Collaros, leading to a field goal.
The Argonauts sealed the victory with a 61-yard interception return for a touchdown by Robert Priester. Wynton McManis then returned another interception, setting up another touchdown by Carey.
Zach Collaros, playing for Winnipeg, had a challenging game, completing 15 of 30 passes with four interceptions. Brady Oliveira, the league’s top Canadian, rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Toronto led 17-10 in the third quarter with a touchdown pass to Kevin Mital. Winnipeg briefly closed the gap before mistakes allowed Toronto to regain control.
Prince Harry made a special appearance at the game, promoting the upcoming Invictus Games in February.
