A Direct Line to Fans: The Red Hand files
Nick Cave continues to engage with his audience in a uniquely direct way through his ongoing series, The Red Hand Files. In the latest installment, Cave answered 50 questions submitted by fans, offering terse responses – “yes,” “no,” “I don’t no,” or the famously blunt “Go fuck yourself” – to a wide range of inquiries.
Brighton Show and a Nod to Amyl and the Sniffers
responding to fan speculation, Cave confirmed with a simple “yes” that plans are underway for a meaningful bad Seeds performance in Brighton, the city where he currently resides. he also offered an keen “yes” when asked if he enjoys the music of Amyl and the Sniffers, signaling his support for the rising Australian punk outfit.
Reconciling Views on Artificial Intelligence
Perhaps the most compelling exchange revolved around the use of artificial intelligence. Cave had previously described AI’s potential impact on the creative industries as “unbelievably disturbing”, fearing a “humiliating effect.” Though, a recent video marking the 40th anniversary of The Bad Seeds’ song ‘tupelo’ featured AI-animated archival photographs of Elvis Presley, prompting a pointed question from a fan named Graham.
Graham challenged Cave, asking if he was “selling yoru soul to AI” and questioning his principles. Cave’s response was a succinct “Zzzz” emoji. Another fan, Carol from Blackburn, offered a more emotional outlook, expressing how the AI-generated imagery of a young Elvis brought her to tears, to which Cave again replied, “yes.”
Cave later elaborated on The Red Hand Files, explaining that director Andrew Dominik, who created the video as a gift, utilized AI without his initial knowledge. Dominik urged Cave to reconsider his position, famously telling him to “Suspend your fucking prejudices and take a look!”
Upon viewing the finished product,Cave admitted a shift in perspective. He described the video as an “extraordinarily profound interpretation” of the song, a “soulful, moving, and entirely original retelling” that served as a touching tribute to both Elvis Presley and the song itself. He noted the “uncanny quality” of the AI-animated images, suggesting they gave the impression of Presley being “raised from the dead,” and found the concluding imagery “shocking and deeply affecting.” He concluded, “To some extent, my mind was changed.”
