Successful Return for De Boinville and The expensive One
Stratford Racecourse witnessed the triumphant return of jockey Harry Cobden, riding The Expensive One to victory in the Dragonbet Proud Sponsors Of Stratford Racecourse Handicap Chase on May 24, 2024. Cobden had been sidelined since April with a severe neck and spinal fracture, requiring him to wear a brace during his recovery, but demonstrated remarkable patience throughout the rehabilitation process.
Despite the omission of hurdles in the home straight due to a low sun, The Expensive One, the 5-4 favourite, immediately took the lead and secured a two-and-a-quarter-length win over Fourtowns. The Nigel and willy Twiston-Davies-trained horse performed strongly despite the altered course conditions.
Cobden expressed his delight at being back in the saddle, telling Racing TV: “I think I’ll come on for the run. He’s a lovely horse and a great horse to come back on. sammy Twiston-Davies gave me some great instructions early on and thank you to the whole team of the Twiston-Davies’ for putting me up.” he added, “It was tough (being sidelined), it was a fracture of the neck and fractures in the spine so it was a slow summer to start with and just delighted to be back under way. You just want to be back here. We’ll just enjoy today and go and have a good time.”
O’Neill Jr. Faces a More challenging Return
Jonjo O’Neill Jr. also made his return to racing on may 24th, after recovering from a back injury sustained in a fall from Dancing City at the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown in april. The racing Post reported that the fall aggravated a pre-existing back condition.
