Irish Actress Admits She Was Lost in Time and Space During Festive Special Filming
Nicola Coughlan, known for her roles in “Bridgerton” and “Derry Girls,” recently revealed she was entirely bewildered while filming the upcoming “Doctor Who” Christmas special.Appearing on “The Graham Norton Show,” Coughlan confessed, “I can’t tell you anything, not as of secrecy but because I had no idea what was going on.”
The actress, who grew up in Ireland, explained that she missed out on the “Doctor Who” phenomenon as a child. “I was brought up in Ireland so didn’t see it as a child,” she said. “So, when I got the part, I looked it up on Wikipedia – it was like reading ‘War and Peace’ and it was so confusing with monsters and time travel.”
Despite the confusion, Coughlan described the experiance as “fun” and expressed her willingness to return to the TARDIS if given the chance.In the Christmas special, titled “joy to the World,” Coughlan plays a character named Joy, who embarks on a time-traveling adventure with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor.
Coughlan also shared a humorous anecdote about her mother’s reaction to her steamy scenes in “Bridgerton.”
“I was 35 and I realised I had never played an adult, and I was like, ‘How do I do this?'” she recalled. “It was then so weird having to play the romantic led and getting up to sexy things.My mother was so mad at me about those scenes – as if they were my fault, so I didn’t go to the screening with her!”
