Nicolas Cage is stepping back into the role of Spider-Man, but not as fans might expect. Prime Video and MGM+ are co-producing Spider-Noir, a live-action series based on the Marvel comic of the same name, set to debut in 2026. The series offers a unique twist: viewers will be able to choose between watching episodes in a classic black and white aesthetic or in full color.

The series reimagines the Spider-Man mythos as a 1930s noir detective story. Cage plays Ben Reilly, an aging private investigator grappling with a past life as the city’s sole superhero. This is a departure from the traditional Peter Parker origin story, a deliberate choice according to co-showrunner Oren Uziel. “Peter Parker feels very associated with a high school kid. Young. On the rise,” Uziel explained to Esquire. Reilly, instead, allows for exploration of a more world-weary hero, haunted by past failures.

The aesthetic choice – offering both black and white and color versions – isn’t merely stylistic. Cage himself sees value in both options, suggesting the black and white version might encourage viewers to explore classic films. “I think the teenagers are going to appreciate the color, but I also want them to have the option,” Cage said. “If they want to experience the concept in black and white, maybe that will spark an interest in watching older movies and enjoying them as an art form.”

A Noir Reimagining of the Spider-Verse

Cage previously voiced Spider-Noir in the animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse. However, this live-action adaptation represents a significant expansion of the character and his world. The series isn’t simply transplanting Spider-Man into a different era; it’s building a fully realized 1930s New York, populated with reimagined Marvel characters.

The supporting cast includes Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, a freelance journalist and friend to Reilly, and Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, a nightclub singer inspired by Black Cat. Brendan Gleeson stars as Silvermane, a mob boss targeted by repeated assassination attempts, forming the central mystery of the series. Jack Huston plays Flint Marko, and Karen Rodriguez portrays Janet, Reilly’s resourceful secretary and comic book aficionado.

The creative team is also steeped in the Spider-Verse lore. Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Amy Pascal, key figures behind the animated films, are producing the series. Harry Bradbeer, known for his work on Fleabag and Killing Eve, directed and executive produced the first two episodes.

Technical and Narrative Choices

The decision to offer two distinct visual experiences – black and white versus color – is a core element of Spider-Noir’s identity. The black and white version aims to evoke the atmosphere of classic 1940s detective films, while the color version provides a more vibrant, comic book-inspired look. The production team deliberately crafted both versions to be equally compelling.

Beyond the visual style, the narrative also leans heavily into the tropes of film noir. Uziel described Reilly as a character who “has already gone through the whole arc and seen it all. He’s jaded and trying to move on, but his past keeps coming back to haunt him.” This contrasts with the typical Spider-Man origin story of a young hero discovering his powers and responsibilities.

The series also reinterprets established Marvel characters to fit the noir setting. Robertson, for example, remains a journalist but operates as a freelancer, navigating the city’s underbelly. The dynamic between Reilly and Robertson is built on contrasting perspectives: Reilly’s cynicism versus Robertson’s optimism. “They’re both investigators,” Uziel explained. “The difference is that Robbie believes everything is going to be okay, while Ben thinks everything is going to go wrong.”

Release and Availability

Spider-Noir will premiere on MGM+’s linear channel in the United States in 2026, with global streaming availability on Prime Video following the next day in over 240 countries and territories. The series features an ensemble cast including Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Academy Award nominee Brendan Gleeson, alongside guest stars such as Lukas Haas and Cameron Britton. The dual-version release – black and white and color – will be available from the outset, offering viewers a choice in how they experience the story.
