Tye Niekamp Earns MVFC Defensive Player of the Week Honors Again
ST. LOUIS – Tye Niekamp, a sophomore middle linebacker for Illinois State, has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Niekamp’s recognition comes after his standout performance in Illinois State’s regular season finale against North Dakota.
Niekamp was instrumental in Illinois State’s 35-13 victory, leading the team with 10 tackles, a sack, and three pass breakups. His efforts helped the Redbird defense limit North Dakota to just 266 total yards. Additionally, Illinois State forced two turnovers and recorded five tackles-for-loss in the game.
For the season, Niekamp has established himself as a key player. He leads the Redbirds with 99 tackles and ranks second in the MVFC. Niekamp also has 10.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and three interceptions, tying for the team and league lead.
Illinois State, now the No. 12 seed, will compete in the first round of the FCS Playoffs on Saturday, November 30, against Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Houck Field.
