Updated June 15, 2025
More than 100 people are dead after an overnight attack by gunmen in Yelwata, a town in northcentral nigeria’s Benue State. Amnesty International is urging the Nigerian government to put an end to what it calls the “almost daily bloodshed” in the region following this latest Benue State attack.
The assault unfolded from late friday into Saturday morning. Amnesty International, documenting the increasing violence in Benue State, noted the attacks cause meaningful displacement and threaten food security, as many victims are farmers.
Tersoo Kula, a spokesman for the Benue governor, said the attack lasted approximately two hours, with numerous homes set ablaze. He added that government and police officials who visited Yelwata reported a death toll of 45.
Police spokesman Udeme Edet confirmed the Benue State attack, stating that officers engaged the assailants in a gunfight. Though, local residents fear the death toll exceeds 100.
Amineh liapha Hir, a Yelwata resident, described the situation as “terribly bad,” estimating that more than 100 people died and many houses were burned.Christian Msuega, another resident, escaped but reported his sister and brother-in-law were burned alive.
conflicts between predominantly Muslim Fulani herders and largely Christian farmers are frequent in the area, often stemming from disputes over land and water access. Last month, suspected herders killed at least 20 people in the Gwer West area of Benue.
The Nigerian authorities must promptly end the almost daily bloodshed in Benue state and bring the actual perpetrators to justice.
