An estimated 200 Nigerian Christians were killed​ last week in what one international ⁣aid organization described as the ‌”worst killing⁢ spree” to date. The attack occurred‌ in Yelwata,a farming community in ‍Guma County,benue State.

Heavily armed​ Fulani militants⁤ targeted the⁣ Christian villagers over two days.Benue State is predominantly Christian, and Yelwata served as a settlement for internally‌ displaced persons (IDPs) ​fleeing previous attacks, according‌ to Micheel Odeh James with Truth Nigeria.

James‌ described the scene as a “genocidal⁣ massacre,” noting that ⁣militants set fire to buildings with people inside and attacked those who tried to escape with ‍machetes.”Babies were burned,” he said.

According⁤ to Aid to ‌the Church in ‌need (ACN), police stopped the attackers at St. ​Joseph’s Church, where 700 people ‌were sheltering. the militants then attacked the town’s ‍market‍ square, setting fire to the accommodations ⁢of displaced people ⁤before opening fire on more than 500 sleeping individuals.
